雷春杂文:疫情中我在美国高中上网课 2020年7月25日
这次百年一遇的世纪疫情,对美国的教育界,产生了巨大的冲击,特别是中小学生。我所在的高中,只有我和另外一个手语老师坚持进行现时synchronous线上教学,使得绝大部分学生没有耽误学习,部分学生还得到了更大的提高。
我首先得益于中文学校的教学实践。在中国疫情爆发后,北美的中文学校协会,组织了多场免费的实时线上教学演示课,帮助中文老师学会建立并使用Zoom和Google Classroom账户,利用这两个基本工具,实现成功的线上教学。并在二月底就开始了线上教学的试用,而且灵活到Hybrid的形式,可以面对面和网上同时进行。
其次,作为华人,我对中国疫情的发展及其严重程度,有比较清晰的认识
雷春杂文:疫情中迟到的毕业典礼

序言
二零二零年七月二十四日,星期五,这一天终于等到了!从今年三月新冠病例渐渐升高时起,女儿的高中毕业典礼就成了悬念。是否会像很多学校那样,只进行网上的视频仪式,还是会有类似往年的庄严激动的正式典礼?
无限延期
三月十九日,春假的最后一天,学区突然发通知,关闭学校,准备抗疫。同时不确定毕业典礼是否会按期举行。
三月二十三日,学区的电邮再次重申,没有决定是否取消毕业典礼。
四月三日,校长代表学区发了一封长信,因为学期结束前,学校都不会开放。往年去州立大学的室内运动场办的典礼,今年因大学校园关闭,无法成行。她对取消预计的毕业典礼致歉,并感谢大家为了他人的人身安全所作出的牺牲。同时,学区在为举办推迟的现场毕业典礼努力,但没有具体日期。
四月十三日,校长办公室发出电邮,仍然把现场毕业典礼放在计划中。这天本来是毕业生领取礼服的日子,但不得不推后,而且要分批领取,保证社交距离。但学校为所有毕业生定制了一份特殊礼物,放在院子里的毕业生标识牌,以致庆祝。
四月十四日,校长办公室再次对不能五月举行毕业典礼道歉,并希望帮助因此感到难过的学生。
新希望
四月二十四日,校长发通知,学区决定在夏天,举办推迟的毕业典礼,但还没有日期。
五月八日,校长终于给了学生可以领取毕业礼服和院子毕业标识牌的时间段。
五月十四日,学区定了女儿高中的毕业典礼为七月二十五日周六的傍晚6点半。地点是本地高中的露天橄榄球场。但是,决定只有学生可以出席,家长只能通过线上的视频观看。如果疫情严重,州长禁止大规模的活动,还是可能变成视频毕业。
五月二十五日,女儿和同学们领到了去年年底就预定的毕业礼服后,兴奋异常,相约拍照。左边的牌子是UPS赠送的,右边的个人化牌子是学校为学生特制的。这些牌子遍布小区,增添毕业季的气氛,也让人体会到和往年的不同。
感动
惊喜之心难以言语。收到女儿小学一年级老师的贺卡和特殊礼物!Starkey老师给女儿的贺卡。她还寄来了保留了12年的女儿的作业!
女儿6岁的理想是成为Top Buffet餐馆的服务员。
她说因为这个工作很容易,读懂菜单就好,还要穿金色的裙子去上班。
期待
六月八日,女儿高中的毕业典礼改时间至七月二十五日周六中午1点。
六月二十三日,校长通知毕业典礼又改时间到七月二十四日中午1点。好消息是,每个学生可以带两个宾客入场。父母终于有了目睹孩子毕业典礼的机会。
七月十七日,学生们领取宾客入场券和为他们定制的有学校标志的口罩。紫色入场券。其它几种颜色的入场时间都不同。以此分批到达,保证社交距离。给每个学生的口罩和纪念章。
终于成行
七月二十四日中午,女儿开车带着我和她爸爸来到了停车场。一眼望去,好久没见到这么多车。根据我们入场券的颜色紫色,工作人员引导我们停在了特定的地方。来到橄榄球场外后,女儿就自己到学生区,我和她爸爸在看台对号入座。全场井然有序,都保持社交距离并戴口罩。看台上保持社交距离的家长。
按社交距离排列的近500把毕业生椅子。
孩子们准时,保持着设计距离入场。
保持社交距离站立,开始了世纪毕业典礼。走台仪式上,不再由学区领导发毕业证书,而是在入场前就领好了,拿在手里,分批排队,领导点名,上台致意。当他们每个人的名字被点到时,都是全场的欢呼雀跃。
全部点名、走台的仪式结束后,扔投毕业帽的欢呼程序,因社交距离而改成了单手高举,全场热烈鼓掌。
典礼后的自拍。周围人多,我们没有冒险摘口罩,也没有找别人拍照,只留下匆匆一瞬间。
这场毕业典礼来得太不容易了。
当地的报纸,特派了两个摄影师和记者,全场追踪,拍下了无数珍贵的照片,几乎所有毕业生的照片都登载在了网页上。

孩子们经历的这次磨练,会是他们一生难忘的精神财富。感谢所有为他们付出无数时间和精力的组织者和志愿者们。
迟到的“毕业舞会”:Senior Prom的取消,对这些花季少年的冲击,不亚于毕业典礼。这几个经常玩在一起的好朋友,于毕业典礼的第二天,自发在一个同学家后院办了个“舞会”,一共没超过10人,满足州长对私人聚会的要求。Toby说,我也是2020毕业!完成了帮助哥哥姐姐长大的任务!
